Let the rides begin! But first, let’s gather in the parking lot at 9:00 am for some introductions and a modest amount of instructions. Our plan is to launch today’s ride from the Adelaide Inn parking lot at 9:10 a.m. sharp! Please try to be timely, so that the rest of the peloton is not left waiting around for you!

Our first ride, which we’ve called “Chimney to Peachy” is the quintessential lead off ride for this year’s Gran Fundo. The familiar route takes us up out of town via 24th Street and Nacimiento Lake Drive which continues onto Chimney Rock for those doing the main and long options. These roads are mostly quiet vineyards and rolling scenic hills to the west and a little north of Paso Robles. The main route (33.5 miles) then turns left onto Adelaida Road which you will follow until the sharp right turn at Vineyard where Shawn will set up our only rest stop for the day at about mile 16.5. From the rest stop the main route will take Vineyard Drive on over to the left turn at Peachy Canyon to begin the beautiful ascent up to the top of our favorite climb. After completing your safe and careful descent down the other side of Peachy Canyon you will head back through town to the Adelaide.

For those opting for the long option (41 miles), instead of making the left at Adelaida Road with those following the main route you will continue straight until the left turn at Cypress Mountain Drive by the Cal Fire Station. Along the way Cypress Mountain Drive will turn into Klau Mine Drive before coming to the junction with Adelaida Road. Make your right onto Adelaida to head toward the rest stop which for the long route will be at about mile 24.

And for those doing the short option (28 miles), you will make a left turn off of Nacimiento Lake Drive, earlier than the main or long, onto Adelaida and will find the rest stop where the road intersects with Vineyard. For the short route, today’s rest stop will be at about mile 11.5, and a good option to refill with water before continuing along Vineyard to begin the climb up and down Peachy Canyon on the way home.

No matter which route you choose today, the magnificent oaks and lonesome roads will be some of the best you will experience in Paso. Take lots of pictures.  You will treasure this kick off ride to start your week of riding.

Here is a RidewithGPS overlay option of today’s routes – check the box for “Show all on map” to see all three routes together.
